復刻版が発売になってはや4年が過ぎました。
この復刻版、購入するとその一部をガイギャックス財団に自動で寄付しちゃうらしいです。
多分世界で最も売れたルールブックがコレじゃないかと思います。
日本ではD&Dといえば赤箱が真っ先にイメージされるでしょうが、太平洋の向こうのオジサン方に言わせりゃデーモンアイドルの表紙ないしは白ローブのオッサンの表紙こそがオラのD&Dってトコロです（マジで）。

またWotC公式の販売ルートでこの復刻PHBのPDF版が簡単に入手できます。
10ドル切る値段です。

まずプレイしたいのならば必携なのがこのプレイヤーズハンドブック(PHB)。ルール量は膨大ですが、プレイヤとして覚えるべきルール自体はたいした量ではありません。ぜひ臆せず試してほしいです。初版ははるか太古に絶版になって久しかったのですが、2012年にWotCより復刻版が出版され、全米のAD&Dゲーマーのオッサンどもがあまりの再現度の高さに歓喜の涙を流しました(自分もその一人です)。

膨大なルール量や一見複雑に感じる処理方法にどう対応するかよりも大切なのは、誠にアメリカらしいのですが、「それぞれの役割を全うする」ことにあります。チームをどうマネジメントしていくか、という点で考えればスポーツや企業での経験の方が有益になるように感じます。この点は後の3e以降でも反映されていますが、最初期のルール群であるため(なんせ1970年代のRPG黎明期、手探り状態で生まれ、無節操に増改築を繰り返した温泉旅館のようなシステムなのです)より粗削り、そして骨太。

マスタによってそれぞれの解釈や世界観があるでしょうが、様々な表やその結果が示唆している内容を考えると、独りよがりで短絡的な冒険者はよほど幸運を持ち合わせていないと長生きできません。当然、長生きできないキャラクタを担当するプレイヤもよほど特殊な性癖を持っていない限り楽しめません。
